The Honda Civic is one of the most popular and beloved vehicles on the road today. This year's model is the second year of the 11th generation, and it brings back the performance-oriented Type R sport hatchback after being off the market for some time. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Honda Civic is available in hatchback and sedan configurations. The sedans include the Sport, EX, Touring, and Si trim levels, while the hatchbacks come in the Sport, EX-L, Sport Touring, and high-performance Type R. You have a large range of options to customize the look of your Civic. Available body colors include Rallye Red, Aegean Blue Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Meteorite Gray Metallic, Morning Mist Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, and Sonic Gray Pearl. Not all colors are available at all trim levels or configurations.
Engine (Power)
Several powertrains are available with the new Civic, depending on the trim level and configuration you choose. The base engine is a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine at 158 horsepower with 138 pound-feet of torque matched to a continuously variable transmission or six-speed manual transmission (hatchbacks only). Next is a 1.5-liter turbo inline-four that gets 180 horsepower with 177 pound-feet mated to a CVT. Third is a more powerful turbo 1.5-liter inline-four at 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet. Finally, the Type R hatchback gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder that makes a whopping 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet.
Performance
Performance varies by the individual powertrain, but all the engines have plenty of pep and are ready to get up and go. The latest Civic only comes with front-wheel drive, and the manual transmission is only available on the hatchback model. Real-world testing by Car and Driver revealed that the turbo 1.5-liter four-cylinder went from zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds (hatchback) and 7.5 seconds (sedan). The more powerful engines sprint even quicker. The Civic also offers nicely weighted steering for athletic and confident handling, and the Brembo brakes on the Type R are sure to bring you to a fast stop when you need it.
Interior
The cabin offers clean lines and a futuristic look with a honeycomb mesh design that stretches the entire length of the dash and hides the air vents behind it. There's plenty of room for small-item storage. The sedan offers 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, while the hatchback offers 24.5 cubic feet of space in the hatch. The Civic is equipped with an available 9-inch touch-screen display and a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. You get standard wireless smartphone integration with bigger screens, and the available Bose sound system is incredible.
Safety Features
The base-level Civic offers you forward collision mitigation that applies the brakes and sounds a warning when a crash is imminent, lane-keeping assistance to help you stay centered, adaptive cruise control to maintain a proper distance in traffic, and a traffic sign reader to help you make decisions on the go. Automatic high beams round it all off. At higher levels, you get features like blind-spot monitoring to watch where you can't, and front and rear parking sensors to help you get into those tight spaces.
