Maintaining Your Honda's Air Conditioning System: Service Tips

With seasonal temperatures that range from the low 80s to the high 80s, in Hawaii, there can be days, even in winter, when you need a refreshing blast of cold AC air. As your Honda dealer, we'd like you to know a few signs you need to visit us for Honda AC maintenance. more Signs You Need To Visit Your Honda Dealer for Honda AC Maintenance Damaged Condenser The condenser converts refrigerant from a gas to a liquid, removing the heat it absorbs from the air. This part of the AC looks like a mini radiator, and it's positioned in front of the radiator that removes heat from the engine by heat exchange. The condenser can become blocked in time, and it can also be damaged by hard objects thrown up from the surface. If the condenser is blocked or damaged, the cooling process won't happen, and the AC will only bow hot air. Our technicians will investigate and repair the damage or replace the condenser, depending on the situation. Once the condenser is operational, your AC will deliver cold air again. Broken Compressor Clutch The compressor is a pump that switches on and off at set times to move refrigerant and air through the system. It's a vital component, as a failed compressor will prevent the AC from working. The compressor is powered by the crankshaft's movement and is controlled by the compressor clutch. In time, the clutch can wear out, and it will jam on or off. A compressor jammed in the off position won't work, and the AC system will shut down. If the clutch jams in the on position, the compressor will run continually and eventually wear out. A damaged clutch can quickly be replaced to fix this problem. If the compressor has been continually running, we'll need to examine it for damage, and it may need replacement. Refirgerant Leak Refrigerant is the colorless, odorless gas used in the AC to draw water from the air and chill it before it blows into your cabin. It operates in an air-tight system, as this gas evaporates when exposed to air. The gas operates under pressure, and a tiny hole in the system or a worn seal can cause a rapid loss of refrigerant. If your AC isn't delivering cold air on demand, could be the cause. We'll examine your AC, and if a leak is the cause, we add a UV dye to the system. We monitor the dye's progress through the AC using a UV monitor, and the dye will highlight the leak site. Once we've found this, we'll seal the leak and refill your refrigerant. If your AC has a problem, contact us today at Tony Honda in Waipahu, WI.

Routine Honda Maintenance: Ensuring Your Vehicle's Longevity and Performance

Congratulations! You've chosen to drive a Honda, a brand with a long history of reliability and dependability. But how can you keep your new or new-to-you Honda running for years and thousands of miles to come? As a leading local Honda dealer, we're intimately familiar with every aspect of Honda maintenance. Here's our guide to keeping your vehicle in top condition. more Routine Honda Maintenance for Longevity and Performance: A Guide from Your Honda Dealer Read Your Owner's Manual The Owner's Manual contains key tips on vehicle-specific requirements. Inside you'll find information on everything from how often to change your oil and what grade to use, to how often to replace filters and have the brakes checked. Keep in mind that the maintenance schedule in your Owner's Manual is a guide, and that you can always bring your Honda in sooner if something isn't behaving quite right. Mind Your Motor Oil The engine is the beating heart of a Honda, and perhaps the most common car maintenance task is ensuring that your engine has enough oil and changing that oil on schedule. Motor oil lubricates the engine so it runs smoothly and helps keep it cool by providing someplace for heat to go. Your Owner's Manual will dictate the weight and type of oil to use. Your Honda may also offer you maintenance minders to let you know when an oil change is coming due. Motor oil typically needs changing every few thousand miles or every few months. It's important to change your oil at whichever criteria comes first; oil degrades with both time and use. Keep in mind that it's also important to make sure there's enough oil to protect your engine. Check your motor oil every week or so, and be sure to add appropriate-weight oil if it gets low, and bring your vehicle in for service if oil runs low suspiciously quickly. Air Filters Engines work by combining fuel with air, which offers oxygen critical for the combustion process. When air filters get clogged, it can decrease airflow and possibly impact performance. Periodically check your engine and cabin air filters to make sure both you and your Honda can breathe clean, fresh air. Spring and autumn are times that can cause a lot of pollen to collect in air filters, so be sure to check your filters in these seasons. Brake Service Keeping your Honda stopping quickly is critically important for safety. Pads, rotors, lines, and fluids are all critical components to keeping your Honda stopping swiftly. If your brakes start to feel soft or spongy or vibrate when you press the pedal, bring your Honda in for service immediately so our team can diagnose the problem. With proper care and maintenance, your Honda will be a fantastic vehicle for years to come. And when it's time to have it serviced, bring it to the people who know it best. Schedule your next service appointment today at Tony Honda in Waipahu, HI.

Read Green Dealer Program Success Story: Tony Honda in Waipahu, Hawaii

Earlier this year, Tony Honda achieved ENERGY STAR certification, becoming one of only four Honda dealerships nationwide to earn the distinction ( learn more). Dealer Principal Tim Dagenais, Director of Technology & Projects Bryan Hsu, and Dealer Principal Stan Masamitsu share more about their roles and the initiatives that earned Tony Honda both the Honda Green Dealer Environmental Leadership Award and ENERGY STAR Certification. Tony Honda is located on the beautiful island of Oahu, making their energy-conscious projects essential for business. Dealer Principal Stan Masamitsu (left), Dealer Principal Tim Dagenais (middle), and Director of Technology & Projects Bryan Hsu (right) Tony Honda has received the Green Dealer Award for an impressive five years in a row. Why is this important to your dealership? While being recognized for our energy efforts is always appreciated, we believe the "why" behind the accolade inspires us to maintain our standing every year. In Hawaii, there is a profound cultural emphasis on environmental stewardship. Our beautiful oceans and skies are not just scenery; they are integral to our way of life and deserve our utmost respect. At Tony Honda, part of our commitment to our community is contributing to our shared responsibility of preserving the land for future generations. What prompted you to join the Honda Environmental Leadership Program in 2014? We work with other manufacturers who don’t offer similar programs. We were impressed with Honda’s commitment to sustainability, which extends beyond energy-efficient vehicles to include green practices in their own facilities. By the time the program began, we had already implemented photovoltaic (PV) systems, installed LED lighting, and upgraded our HVAC system to more energy-efficient models. The Green Dealer Program aligned perfectly with our existing sustainability efforts and further supported our goals. Speaking of PVs, tell us about Tony Honda’s extensive solar panel installation. Hawaii's electricity costs are among the highest in the country, so ten years ago we installed PV panels. More recently, we upgraded to more efficient panels and added a battery storage system. These improvements have significantly reduced our electricity bills by storing excess energy and lowering our reliance on the grid. We also benefit from valuable federal and state tax credits. Solar panels are widely used here, visible on many homes, businesses, and even at the local Costco. How do you think an energy-efficient store sets you up for success in Honda’s electrified future? There are benefits to focusing on energy-efficient setups at dealerships. Our PV solar panels and battery storage systems helped offset the increased electrical demand, especially with the introduction of Level 3 chargers, and handle demand usage spikes that typically would lead to higher utility costs.  These systems also decrease our reliance on utility companies and their increasing rates, while protecting against power outages and similar disruptions. Upgrading to a PV system made sense for the Tony Honda facility, and it continues to prove worthwhile for the business years later. However, we understand that some dealerships might not have the electrical infrastructure to support all the current and future EV chargers that American Honda will require their dealers to deploy. What are some of the biggest benefits to being part of the Program? The Green Dealer Program provides substantial cost savings and ensures we stay up to date with evolving award and certification requirements.  Knowing the benchmarks we need to meet has been incredibly valuable. The Green Dealer Program is also a pivotal resource for research, planning, design, and navigating available tax credits, rebates, and grants. Being a part of the Green Dealer Program has saved us a significant amount of time. What has been your biggest learning through the process of implementing energy-efficient measures? It's crucial to partner with high-quality vendors when developing your PV and battery storage systems. With so many options available, vendors must be capable of designing and engineering extensive systems to meet your specific size and capacity needs. It is essential to be confident in your vendor's technical expertise and know-how as panels and batteries evolve, making compatibility and ongoing support possible. Out of all the sustainable initiatives you’ve put into place, which has had the biggest impact as far as cost savings? PV solar and battery storage have had the most significant impact on cost savings. Upgrading to LED lighting for energy efficiency is another major contributor. Tell us about the brand new, ground-up facility you’re building in Kona on the Big Island. Starting from the ground up presents exciting opportunities. We aim to make our new Kona facility as green and off-grid as possible, incorporating a PV system with battery storage and a backup generator. We’re also integrating extensive recycling programs and innovative water conservation measures, including brackish water landscape irrigation, grey water recycling, and atmospheric water generation. Green Dealer is assisting us by reviewing our plans and offering practical feedback. It’s an exhilarating project. What advice would you give to other Honda dealers about the Honda Environmental Leadership Program? There are numerous opportunities available, and many will benefit your dealership. Green Dealer can help you navigate these options effectively.  Why not take advantage of their expertise? Take Advantage of Honda Environmental Leadership Program Benefits Green dealers nationwide support Global Honda’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. To participate, visit Green Dealer Honda and / or contact representatives at greendealer@ahm.honda.com or 877-658-0345.

Exploring Honda's Advanced Safety Features

Safety is at the forefront of every Honda design. When you sit behind the wheel of a Honda, you're surrounded by a cocoon of protective features that make driving safer and easier than ever. As your Honda dealer, we want to tell you more about the Honda safety features that protect you and provide peace of mind when you're driving. more Honda Safety Features: Advanced Protection on the Road Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) When driving, it's possible to partially stray into another lane without realizing it. This can be very dangerous as it can easily lead to an accident. This system uses a forward-looking camera connected to your rearview mirror to watch the lines on the road. If the camera observes your vehicle is moving away from the center of the lane unintentionally, the system will sound an alert. LKAS is proactive. If you don't respond quickly enough, it will apply torque to the wheels to steer your vehicle back into the lane. This system will warn you to take corrective action to stay in your lane. Forward Collision Warning (FCW) This system uses the front camera and radar to detect any vehicles ahead of you. It assesses your speed and the distance between your Honda and the vehicle ahead. If it determines that you're closing too fast on the other vehicle, the system flashes a brake warning and sounds an alarm. This system is sensitive enough to give plenty of advanced warning to enable you to brake. Collision Mitigating Braking System (CMBS) This feature also utilizes the forward camera and radar and is even more proactive. If the FCW system has identified a potential collision risk, the CMBS will provide visual and audible alerts to warn you of danger. Some Honda models add an additional warning as the seat belt will tug on you. If you don't respond in time, the CMBS automatically applies strong braking to prevent a collision or reduce its impact. It can also, on some models, automatically tighten your seatbelt to put you in the safest position to brace for a possible impact. Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) The RDM is programmed to recognize painted lane lines, cat's eyes, and Botts Dots on the road. It uses these markers to keep your Honda within the correct lane. It can also identify if your vehicle crosses a solid line and is about to leave the road. If this happens, it automatically provides visual and audible warnings. The system will guide your wheels back toward the center of the lane if you don't intervene. It can also apply rapid braking if necessary. Your Honda may have even more advanced features depending on its model. Contact us today at Tony Honda in Waipahu, HI, to learn more.
