1. Waikiki
The famous Waikiki, or “spouting waters” in Hawaiian on the south shore of Honolulu, was once the playground of Hawaiian royalty. The beach, with its crescent-shaped stretch of white sand along the edge of the turquoise-blue Pacific Ocean, runs from the Hilton Hawaii Village to Kapi’olani Park.
Waikiki Beach is Hawaii’s biggest tourist attraction, lined with food stalls, shops, restaurants, beachfront hotels, and resorts. The Waikiki Beach Walk offers plenty of exciting activities and entertainment along the boardwalk.
2. Diamond Head State Monument
The Diamond Head, also known as Lē‘ahi, at the east end of Waikiki Beach, is the most prominent landmark in Honolulu. The 475-acre Diamond Head State Monument covers the crater’s inner and outer slopes, formed approximately 300,000 years ago during an explosive eruption. Take the Honda for a scenic drive around Diamond Head and follow the road around the crater and through the tunnel.
Take a steep and strenuous 0.8-mile hike from the crater floor to the summit to see the Fire Control Station completed in 1911, bunkers, a giant navigational lighthouse built in 1917, and the spectacular view from Koko Head to Wai’anae.
3. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
The beautiful Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a pristine marine ecosystem, is the premier snorkeling destination on Oahu island. The preserve is on the southeastern side of the island near Hawaii Kai, tucked into Koko Head and a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park voted Best Beach in the United States in 2016.
Visitors must watch a short informative video at the education center to learn about marine life, preservation, and safety before entering the preserve to get close to the aquatic life and view hundreds of tropical fish. Shops offer equipment rentals, including snorkeling gear, and lessons to visitors to experience the breathtaking beauty of the reef ecosystem and its inhabitants up close.
4. Iolani Palace
The magnificent Iolani Palace in Honolulu stands on the site that has been the seat of royal power since 1845 when King Kamehameha III moved the capital of Hawaii from Lahaina to Honolulu. The impressive palace, with its ornate facades and wide verandas, is a prime example of Hawaiian Renaissance architectural style mixed with elegant Italian forms and beautiful Hawaiian elements.
The palace’s interior is a meticulous recreation of when Iolani was still the official royal residence of Hawaii. The Throne Room, Grand Hall, State Dining Room, and the King’s and Queen’s Suites are decorated with original fabrics and furnishings. Iolani Palace was completed in 1882 and is the only historic royal residence on U.S. soil
